Healing is a wonderful thing, isn’t it? I’m finally starting to feel like I can be up and about a bit more since hurting myself last week. I still can’t walk around or sit in hard chairs for very long without my back freaking out, but I can at least hold up a camera. Which is what I did today, when I snapped some shots of our dining room. When we moved in last week, it was one of the first rooms we tried to unpack and tidy up, and though there are still some temporary arrangements in place, I really like the direction we’re taking it. (This is what the front rooms looked like before we moved in.)

As you can see, we lean heavily toward vintage pieces. If I had to name the aesthetic, I guess I’d call it a mid-century industrial look.
We found this globe in a vintage shop in Melbourne, Australia, and shipped it home to ourselves. It’s from the 1950s, and the constellations are labeled in Japanese. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The cast-iron jacks are a reference to my last name. I’ve wanted some ever since I was a kid, and played with the doorstop versions in my grandparents’ house.

These pink lockers weigh about a million pounds. I didn’t think about that when I bought them, and after my brother helped me load them into his truck and bring them to the house we were living in at the time, we realized there was no way we were going to be able to carry them inside. So they sat outside on our driveway for a few days, til I cajoled five family members into helping me move them into the garage. The movers we hired got an extra tip for getting these bad boys into our new place.

Steven and I tend to collect weird/silly vintage figurines, and while unpacking he found a bunch and scattered them around in unexpected places. Finding them above doors and on moldings throughout the house was fun. This kitten used to have a matching friend until last month, when a certain cat threw it on the floor and broke it. Luckily she won’t be able to reach this one up here.
Just look at this remorseless criminal. I’m not sure why we put up with her.
