Make a DIY Leather Plant Hanger

This leather plant hanger is the answer to what to do when you run out of surfaces to put your plants on.

The more plant-themed Instagram accounts I follow, the more plants I acquire. Eventually Soon I’ll run out of floor, table, and windowsill space for them, but that doesn’t mean no more plants, that just means it’s time to go vertical!

Besides increasing the spots for plants, hanging plants also add to the jungle effect by helping you literally surround yourself with greenery.

Just be careful where you hang your plants–Steven and I had a longstanding argument about a hanging fern in the bathroom that he didn’t appreciate touching him. I finally had to give in and let him move it.

The pot I used is about 4 inches tall by 4 inches in diameter (4 inches = 10 cm), but the leather plant hanger is pretty flexible, so it should be able to accommodate a variety of pot sizes. But the bigger/heavier your plant is, the thicker leather you should use for the holder.

Materials

Leather – 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches, on the thicker side.
Grommets/eyelets – You’ll need 4; I used black ones.
Leather suede cord/lacing

Tools

Scissors
X-acto knife
Hammer
Grommet/eyelet setter
Binder clips
Cutting surface, such as cutting board or cutting mat
Marker (optional)

Steps

1. Print out the template, and cut out the outer circle. (It should print at about 8 inches in diameter, but I’ve had trouble with my browser trying to print it smaller, so click “fit to page” in your printer options if it tries to print it smaller.) Place it on the back side of the leather, and clip it in place with the binder clips.

2. Cut the outer circle out of the leather with scissors, moving the binder clips out of the way as you go. Then cut the slits with the X-acto knife. To get a smooth line, it helped me to rotate the leather while cutting. Make sure to press hard enough to go all the way through the paper and the leather, and check to make sure that the slit is cut to its full length.

3. Before removing the template, cut small x-shaped slits for the grommets, at the marked spots. It’ll be difficult to see them on the leather, so I also marked mine with a red marker on the back of the leather.
4. Remove the template, and add the grommets/eyelets. I used the kind that is only one piece and is applied with a hammer and setting tool, but you could also use the larger two-piece kind that sets with pliers.

5. Cut two pieces of leather cord/lace of equal lengths. Mine were 53 inches long each, but you will probably want to vary your length depending on your hanging situation. Thread the cord ends through opposite eyelet holes, and tie knots.

You can just loop the leather over a hook, or you could gather the ends together and tie them into a knot, leaving a loop at the end. You could also thread the leather through a metal ring before knotting it, or add an S-hook or carabiner.

    1. Kali, I don’t think she copied me, the idea has been around for years. DesignSponge did a version four years ago, but I was reminded of it by seeing holders like this for sale in a local plant shop.

I made my own template, so I thought it was worth sharing in case people found it useful. Very few ideas are new and entirely original 🙂

      Thanks Kali!

  1. Hello,
I really like this hanging planter! I want to make it with metallic leather but I’m having a tough time finding metallic leather…do you have any suggestions?

    1. So glad you like it, Lana! That sounds like a great idea. This amazon seller has some metallic leather: http://amzn.to/2ejKa2W
Fabric.com has some metallic faux leather, but it would need to have the right weight and a non-fuzzy backing, so it’s hard to tell whether these would work: https://www.fabric.com/home-decor-fabric.aspx?SearchText=faux+leather+metallic

Ooh, what if you used leather foil in whatever finish you want (gold, silver, etc.), to add gilding to the leather holder? Like this: http://www.brit.co/gold-leaf-gilded-clutch/
I might have to try that!
