Stair Landing Plans

Stair Landing Plans

While I’ve been sitting around feeding our baby girl, I’ve had lots of time to dream of future projects. The first one that I think I’ll be tackling is one I mentioned over a year ago, revamping the railing on our upstairs landing. The plant arrangement and accessories have changed, but the railing still looks like this:

The railing is about to be way more of a problem than it used to be, because it’s super short, much too short to attach a baby gate to. Since Juniper is only 14 weeks old, it’s really tempting to kick this can down the road, but one of the reasons she doesn’t nap is that when I put her into her crib to nap, she flips over to her stomach and works on her crawling skills. She can already stick her butt in the air, hold her torso up, and somehow manages to spin herself around to point in the opposite direction she started. So I have a feeling she’ll be crawling, and walking, sooner than we expect.

It’s funny, because when I wrote this post in January 2018 about finding a solution to this railing, I don’t think we had even for sure decided to try to have a baby. Child-proofing wasn’t really on my radar. And now we have a 3 1/2-month-old daughter. Life comes at you fast!

The ideas I had for a macrame or rope divider for the railing don’t seem like a good plan any more. My new plan is to rip the existing railing out entirely, and replace it with one that will go all the way to the ceiling. Yes, it’ll be awkward because it’ll go in front of the window, but I think it’ll be the safest, most long-term solution for the space. And despite wracking my brains, I really can’t think of a better solution.

Pre-baby, I’d be able to knock this project out in a weekend. Now, I’m not sure when I’ll have a chance to get it done. But we have an immovable deadline coming up (a walking baby), so hopefully I’ll be able to work on it soon.
