10 Things to Do While Social Distancing: Plant Therapy

If you’re not worried about the state of the world right now, I want what you’re having. Although I can’t solve any of the big problems, I do know that seeing green life is good for your morale. So here are ten ideas for some plant therapy to help boost your spirits.

1. Start seeds. Even if you don’t have a yard, you can grow edibles and flowers in containers. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to need food assistance in the next few months, plus the more food you grow the less you need to go to the grocery store. So start more than you need and give away extra plants. Depending on the type, you can sow seeds directly in the ground, but you don’t need much to start seeds indoors. You can even make containers from things like egg cartons, toilet paper tubes, or newspaper. An inexpensive seed starter kit like this one is handy, too. If you don’t already have seeds, order them online, or pick them up the next time you’re at a grocery store that has them.

2. Spring clean your houseplants. Read my how-to guide here.

3. If you have a yard, get started on spring weeding and pruning. The more weeds you pull now, the fewer you’ll have later in the season. We see a big difference when we tackle the dandelions in our yard early. You can even use them to make your own dandelion pesto.

4. Repot, and fertilize your houseplants. Read my tips here.

5. Make plant pots, or beautify the ones you already have. These gold and concrete pots are one of my favorite DIY projects. A little paint or gold leaf can do wonders for boring pots.

6. Forage for flowers and greenery, and make a flower arrangement. Obviously you need to be more careful than usual about where you forage from, and avoid crowded public areas!

7. Make a kokedama moss ball. I shared instructions here.

8. Propagate your plants. Take cuttings of your houseplants, and grow more. You can enlarge your own indoor jungle, or give them away to friends and family when this is all over. I have lots of plant propagation tips here.

9. Make self-watering planters. You’ll need them to stay up on watering after you propagate all of your plants, and we can leave our houses again, ha! Get my instructions here.

10. Build a plant stand or hanger. I have a several different options here, here, here, and here.
