A couple of months ago Steven and I decided to give our bedroom a little refresh. And somehow that turned into a mini bedroom makeover. Here’s the before, and a little bit about where it’s headed.
Let’s go back in time, to when we bought our house in 2013.
These real estate listing photos give you the best sense of the room’s awkward layout. It’s on the top floor, and this view is looking toward the front of the house, where my closet is. The door to the in-suite bathroom is on the left.
And here’s the view in the opposite direction.
It isn’t a big room, but counting the double doors to the walk-in closet, there are five doors, and no windows. With the sloped ceilings, it’s a bit of a tricky space.
We immediately switched out the light fixtures, repainted the walls, and gave that walk-in closet a complete overhaul.
I didn’t take official “before” photos, but it hadn’t changed much since I shared a room tour back in 2015. Other than the lamps, this view was still pretty accurate.
It wasn’t bad, but it just never really felt like it came together into a cohesive room. And some of our furniture needed an upgrade. But the thing that really set me on this path was a door. This is a totally unstyled picture of the door to our bathroom:
There was something that set it apart from every other door in the house. No, not the weird shape. Ok, yes the weird shape. But also every other door in the house (except for one in the basement) is solid wood. Most of them are classic five-panel doors. And then here’s this misshapen hollow-core door to our bathroom.
I actually like the shape. It’s kind of charming. And it’s totally necessary. But for a bathroom door in our bedroom, the lack of sound-dampening was a dealbreaker. So that was the first problem I had to solve.
Not the worst problem in the world, I know. Once I started working on it, though, it got us thinking about what else we wanted to change.
Other problems in the room:
- Want a bigger bed.
- Time for a bigger, nicer dresser.
- The rug colors feel limiting.
- Want shelves for books.
- Need plants.
- Room doesn’t feel cohesive or cozy.
Stay tuned to find out how we tackled all of these issues. Starting with that damn door.
